Best eSIM for Europe (2026): Prices, Country Coverage and Which Plan to Buy
Updated · Wayfarro team

The best eSIM for Europe is the one that covers every country on your route at the lowest price for your data use. On price, 10GB for 30 days costs $15 with Wayfarro and $23 with Nomad. Ten days of unlimited data costs $29 with Wayfarro, $34 with Nomad and $35 with Airalo. Wayfarro's prices come straight from its store; Nomad's and Airalo's were checked in September 2026. Coverage matters just as much: check that the UK, Switzerland and Turkey are included if they're on your itinerary.
Best eSIM for Europe: prices compared
These are regional Europe plans, taken from each provider's own Europe page and confirmed in US dollars. Providers change prices and run sales often, so check before you buy.

How to read this table: Wayfarro is the cheapest or tied on every plan more than one provider sells, fixed and unlimited, and it's the only one with a 1-day plan. Nomad's 50GB plan matched Wayfarro's price while its sale ran. Airalo covers the most countries. A dash means the provider doesn't sell that exact plan, or we couldn't confirm its US-dollar price. Airalo's Europe page only listed unlimited plans when we checked.
Wayfarro's unlimited rows are its Unlimited Lite plans: 1GB a day at full speed, then 512 kbps until the next day. It also sells Unlimited Essential (1GB a day, then 1.25 Mbps) and Unlimited Plus (2GB a day, then 2 Mbps). Seven days costs $22 on Essential and $29 on Plus.
Check the country list before the price
Even the best eSIM for Europe on price is no use if it drops out at a border. "Europe" means different things to different providers, and the gaps are almost always the same countries:
- United Kingdom: Included in Wayfarro's and Nomad's Europe plans. Worth checking on any plan, because the UK left the EU and isn't part of the EU's roaming rules anymore.
- Switzerland: Included in Wayfarro's and Nomad's plans. It's not in the EU either, so don't assume.
- Turkey: Included in Wayfarro's Europe plan. Nomad's Europe country list doesn't include it, so an Istanbul add-on would need a separate plan there.
- Serbia and Moldova: Both on Wayfarro's list. Neither is on Nomad's.
- Gibraltar and San Marino: On Nomad's list, but not on Wayfarro's. If a day trip to the Rock is part of your Spain itinerary, factor that in.
Wayfarro's Europe plan also covers the Canary Islands, Iceland, Norway, Vatican City and Liechtenstein, alongside the EU countries. For Airalo, check the full country list on its site; it lists 41 countries and networks.
What "unlimited" means on a Europe eSIM
Every unlimited travel eSIM has a fair-use policy. Once you've used a set amount of high-speed data in a day, your speed drops until the next day. Wayfarro publishes its limits on the plan page: 1GB a day on Lite and Essential, 2GB a day on Plus, then 512 kbps, 1.25 Mbps or 2 Mbps for the rest of the day. Nomad says data continues at 512kbps after the daily allocation, with high-speed data resetting every 24 hours from activation. Airalo's Europe page doesn't spell out its limits, so read the plan terms before you buy.
In practice:
- 512kbps handles maps, WhatsApp, email and train apps. It's too slow for HD video or smooth video calls.
- If you'll hotspot a laptop on long train rides, compare tethering rules as closely as the price. Wayfarro allows hotspot, and Nomad says its eSIMs support it too.
- If you can predict your use, a fixed plan is usually cheaper. A 10GB plan covers most two-week trips of maps, messaging and social media.
Which is the best eSIM for Europe for your trip?
Match the plan to your trip, not the other way round:
- Weekend city break (2–4 days): A 1GB or 3GB plan is plenty for maps and messaging. Wayfarro's 1GB costs $4. If you want unlimited for a very short trip, Wayfarro's 3-day plan is $6.50 and Airalo's is $11.50.
- One week, heavy use: A 7-day unlimited plan. Wayfarro's is $21, the cheapest in this comparison.
- Two-week rail trip across several countries: 10GB for 30 days ($15 at Wayfarro) or 15 days unlimited ($32). Pick unlimited if you post a lot of video or tether a laptop.
- A month or more, heavy fixed data: 50GB for 30 days is $35 at Wayfarro and $35 at Nomad (on sale when we checked), strong value per gigabyte either way. Wayfarro's 30-day unlimited is $47 if you'd rather not count at all, and it goes up to 100GB ($100) for a month of remote work.
- Itinerary includes Turkey, Serbia or Moldova: Check the country list first. Wayfarro covers all three on one plan.
- Europe plus somewhere else (say, a stopover in Japan): Use the Trip Builder to put every country on one order.
Networks and coverage across Europe
Regional Europe eSIMs roam onto local networks in each country. Wayfarro's Europe plan uses Vodafone, Orange, Telefónica and local partners. Nomad names carriers such as Orange, Vodafone, O2, Telia, A1 and EE across its 35 countries. In practice, your phone picks a partner network automatically when you cross a border.
A few things that catch travelers out:
- Ferries and flights: Onboard mobile service often runs over satellite or maritime networks. The EU's own guidance says roaming rules don't apply to satellite service and recommends flight mode on board. Your eSIM data won't work there either, so use onboard Wi-Fi.
- Border areas: Near a border, your phone can latch onto the neighboring country's network. On a plan that covers both countries, it doesn't matter.
- Rural areas and mountains: Coverage thins out in the Alps, the Scottish Highlands and parts of the Balkans, whatever the provider. Download offline maps before long hikes.
Why EU roaming rules don't help most visitors
"Roam like at home" is for EU SIM cards, not tourist phones from outside the EU. The EU rule means an EU mobile plan works across the EU, plus Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, at domestic prices. If your SIM is from the US, Canada, Australia, the UAE or anywhere else outside the bloc, your home carrier sets its own roaming prices.
That's why a regional eSIM makes sense even for a short Europe trip. One plan covers the whole route, including the UK and Switzerland, which EU roaming rules don't. You don't need a new SIM at each border.
How to set up a Europe eSIM
Install at home, switch it on when you land. It takes about two minutes:
- Check your phone is unlocked and supports eSIM. iPhone XS and later, Google Pixel 3 and later, and most recent Samsung Galaxy phones do.
- Install over Wi-Fi before you fly. Scan the QR code or use the one-tap install link. Step-by-step install guide.
- Label it "Europe" so it's easy to pick in settings.
- When you land, set the Europe eSIM as your mobile-data line and turn on Data Roaming for it. Travel eSIMs technically roam, so data won't connect without this.
- Keep your home SIM on for calls and texts (with its data roaming off) so you still get bank verification codes.
With Wayfarro, validity starts when the eSIM first connects in a covered country, not when you install it. If you run low, you can top up the same eSIM without reinstalling.
Bottom line
For most trips, Wayfarro is the best eSIM for Europe on price. It's the cheapest or tied in this comparison on every plan more than one provider sells, and it covers the UK, Switzerland and Turkey on one plan. Nomad's 50GB sale price matched it for very heavy fixed-data users, and Airalo covers the most countries. See Wayfarro's Europe eSIM plans. If your trip is a single country, a country plan like Italy can be cheaper still.
FAQ
Does a Europe eSIM work in the UK and Switzerland?
It depends on the provider, so check the country list. Wayfarro's and Nomad's Europe plans both include the UK and Switzerland. Neither country is covered by the EU's roam-like-at-home rules, so don't assume every Europe plan includes them.
Is Turkey included in Europe eSIM plans?
Not always. Wayfarro's Europe plan includes Turkey, while Nomad's Europe country list doesn't. If Istanbul is part of your trip, confirm Turkey is on the plan before you buy, or add a separate Turkey plan.
How much data do I need for two weeks in Europe?
Most travelers use 0.5–1GB a day on maps, messaging, train apps and social media, so 10GB covers a typical two-week trip. If you stream video or tether a laptop on long train rides, a 15-day unlimited plan is the safer choice.
Do Europe travel eSIMs come with a phone number?
Most are data-only. Keep your home SIM active for calls and texts, with its data roaming turned off, and use WhatsApp, FaceTime or other apps over the eSIM's data.
When does a Wayfarro Europe eSIM start counting down?
Validity starts when the eSIM first connects to a network in a covered country, not when you install it. Install it at home on Wi-Fi before you fly, then switch it on and turn on data roaming when you land.
