Best eSIM for Mauritius (2026): Prices, Emtel Coverage and Which Plan to Buy
Updated · Wayfarro team

The best eSIM for Mauritius depends on whether you want a fixed amount of data or unlimited. For fixed data, Wayfarro is the cheapest of the three providers we checked on the small plans: 1GB for 7 days is $7 against Nomad's $9, and 5GB for 30 days is $24 against $25. For unlimited, Wayfarro is cheaper up to 5 days and Airalo is cheaper from 7 days up: a week costs $37 at Wayfarro and $35 at Airalo. Wayfarro's prices come straight from its store; Nomad's and Airalo's were checked in October 2026.
Mauritius is a resort island with good Wi-Fi in hotels and villas, so most visitors need less data than they'd buy for a city trip. That tilts the choice towards a small fixed plan, which is where Wayfarro is strongest.

These are Mauritius-only plans, taken from each provider's own Mauritius page and confirmed in US dollars. Providers change prices and run sales often, so check before you buy.

How to read this table: Wayfarro is cheapest on 1GB, 3GB and 5GB, level with Nomad on 10GB, and well behind Nomad on 20GB. On unlimited, Wayfarro is cheaper for 3 and 5 days and the only provider here with a 1-day plan; Airalo is cheaper at 7 days and the gap widens at 10, 15 and 30 days. A dash means the provider doesn't sell that exact plan, or we couldn't confirm its US-dollar price. Nomad sells only fixed data for Mauritius and Airalo's page listed only unlimited plans when we checked.
Wayfarro's unlimited rows are its Unlimited Lite plans: 1GB a day at full speed, then 512 kbps until the next day. It also sells Unlimited Essential (1GB a day, then 1.25 Mbps) and Unlimited Plus (2GB a day, then 2 Mbps). Seven days costs $44 on Essential and $89 on Plus. Airalo states its own rule on its Mauritius page: full speed for the first 3GB each day, up to 20 Mbps, then 1 Mbps until the next day.
Which Mauritius eSIM should you buy?
The best eSIM for Mauritius for your trip depends on how much you'll use outside the hotel, because the Wi-Fi does the heavy lifting:
- A week at a resort in Grand Baie, Flic-en-Flac or the east coast: 3GB for 30 days at $16 covers maps, WhatsApp and taxi bookings outside the hotel. Nomad's 3GB is $17.
- Two weeks in a villa, posting photos and video: 5GB at $24 or 10GB at $29. Top up without reinstalling if you run low.
- A long stay or a month working from the island: Nomad's 20GB at $39 beats Wayfarro's $60. Wayfarro is the only one here selling 50GB and 100GB for 30 days.
- A few days of heavy use, video calls every day: Wayfarro's 3-day unlimited at $16 and 5-day at $27 are the cheapest here.
- A week or more of unlimited: Airalo, at $35 for 7 days and $38 for 10. Wayfarro's 10-day plan is $53.
- A one-night stopover between Africa and Asia: Wayfarro's 1-day unlimited at $7. Nobody else in this comparison sells a 1-day plan.
Networks and coverage in Mauritius
Mauritius has three mobile operators: Mauritius Telecom, Emtel and CHiLi. Mauritius Telecom is the incumbent, part-owned by Orange and the government. Emtel, owned by the Currimjee group, launched in May 1989 as the first mobile operator in the Southern Hemisphere. CHiLi is the smallest, run by Mahanagar Telephone Mauritius.
Nomad and Airalo both put their Mauritius eSIMs on Emtel. Wayfarro doesn't name the network on its plan page, so you'll see which one you've landed on when the eSIM connects.
The island is small and densely built along its coasts, so coverage in the resort strips, Port Louis and the plateau towns is a non-issue on any network. The places to expect gaps:
- Black River Gorges National Park: 67 km² of forest with 60 km of trails in the hilly south-west. Signal fades in the gorges, so download the trail map before you set off.
- Le Morne and Chamarel: The peninsula and the coloured-earth hills in the far south-west are the thinnest-covered corner of the main island.
- The lagoon and catamaran trips: Coverage drops off a few hundred metres offshore, on every network.
- Rodrigues: The autonomous outer island 560 km to the east is served by the local operators, but more thinly than the mainland.
How to set up an eSIM for Mauritius
Install at home on Wi-Fi, switch it on when you land at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam airport. It takes a couple of minutes:
- Check your phone is unlocked and supports eSIM. iPhone XS and later, Google Pixel 3 and later, and most recent Samsung Galaxy phones do.
- Install over Wi-Fi before you fly. Scan the QR code or use the one-tap install link. The step-by-step install guide covers iPhone and Android.
- Label it "Mauritius" so you can find it in settings.
- When you land, set the Mauritius eSIM as your mobile-data line and turn on Data Roaming for it. Travel eSIMs are roaming profiles, so data won't connect without this.
- Keep your home SIM on for calls and texts with its own data roaming off, so bank verification codes still arrive.
Wayfarro's validity starts when the eSIM first connects in Mauritius, not when you install it, so there's no penalty for installing a week early.
What to know on the ground in Mauritius
The airport is at Plaine Magnien in the south-east, 48 km from Port Louis, and most resorts are on the opposite coasts. The transfer to Grand Baie in the north or Flic-en-Flac in the west is the first long stretch where you'll want data for the driver's WhatsApp and a look at the route. Have the eSIM switched on before you leave the terminal.
Resort and villa Wi-Fi is generally good, which is why a 3GB or 5GB plan goes further here than in a city. Where the eSIM earns its keep is outside the hotel: the Chamarel and Black River Gorges day trip, the Port Louis market, booking a taxi back from a beach bar, and the catamaran trips where you'll want to share photos the moment you're back in range.
If you're combining Mauritius with Réunion or Madagascar, Wayfarro's Africa bundle covers all three on one eSIM. It costs more per gigabyte than the Mauritius-only plan, so it's only worth it for a genuine island hop. The Africa eSIM guide covers what's in it.
Bottom line
Wayfarro is the best eSIM for Mauritius if you want a small fixed plan or a few days of unlimited; Airalo is the better buy for a week or more of unlimited, and Nomad for 20GB. Whichever you pick, install it at home and turn on data roaming when you land. FAQ
Which network is best for an eSIM in Mauritius?
Mauritius has three operators: Mauritius Telecom, Emtel and CHiLi. Emtel, launched in 1989 as the first mobile operator in the Southern Hemisphere, is the network Nomad and Airalo both put their Mauritius eSIMs on. Wayfarro doesn't name the network on its plan page. The island is small and densely populated, so all three cover the resort coasts and towns well; the gaps are in the Black River Gorges forest and out on the lagoon.
Is Wayfarro cheaper than Nomad and Airalo for Mauritius?
On small fixed plans, yes: 1GB is $7 against Nomad's $9, and 3GB and 5GB are a dollar cheaper too, with 10GB level at $29. Nomad is far cheaper on 20GB. On unlimited, Wayfarro wins up to 5 days and is the only one with a 1-day plan, while Airalo is cheaper from 7 days up. Competitor prices were checked in October 2026.
How much data do I need for a week in Mauritius?
Less than most trips. Resort and villa Wi-Fi covers the evenings, so the eSIM mostly handles maps, WhatsApp, taxi bookings and photos on the beach and on day trips. 3GB over a week is plenty for most couples, and $24 buys 5GB if you post video. Only daily video calls or laptop tethering justify an unlimited plan.
Does a Mauritius eSIM work on Rodrigues?
Rodrigues is part of the Republic of Mauritius, about 560 km east of the main island, and the local operators serve it. Travel eSIMs are sold for the country, not the island, so a Mauritius plan should connect there, but coverage on the island is thinner than on the mainland coasts. Check your provider's coverage list before you fly out, and expect nothing on the boat crossings.
Can I use one eSIM for Mauritius, Réunion and Madagascar?
Yes. Wayfarro's Africa bundle covers Mauritius, Réunion and Madagascar on one eSIM, plus Kenya, Tanzania, South Africa and six more countries, with 5GB for 30 days at $35. It costs more per gigabyte than the Mauritius-only plan, so it only makes sense if you're visiting at least two of the islands.
