Best eSIM for Greece (2026): Prices, Island Coverage and Which Plan to Buy

Updated · Wayfarro team

best esim for greece

The best eSIM for Greece is the one that holds a signal on the islands and doesn't overcharge you for it. For light use, 1GB for 7 days costs $4 with Wayfarro and $4 with Nomad. For heavy use, 7 days of unlimited data costs $21 with Wayfarro, $25 with Nomad and $27 with Airalo. Wayfarro's prices come straight from its store; Nomad's and Airalo's were checked in October 2026. All three work fine in Athens, Thessaloniki and the main island towns. The differences are the network, which lengths exist, and the price once you leave the mainland.

How to read this table: On fixed data, Wayfarro and Nomad are level at 1GB and 50GB, and Wayfarro is cheaper at every size in between, by the widest margin at 3GB, 5GB and 10GB. On unlimited plans, Wayfarro and Nomad are level at 3 days and Wayfarro is the cheapest here at 5, 7 and 10 days. At 15 and 30 days only Wayfarro and Airalo sell a plan, and Wayfarro's is the cheaper of the two. Wayfarro is also the only one with a 1-day plan. A dash means the provider doesn't sell that exact plan, or we couldn't confirm its US-dollar price. Airalo also sells fixed-data Greece plans; check its site for current prices.

Wayfarro's unlimited rows are its Unlimited Lite plans: 1GB a day at full speed, then 512 kbps until the next day. It also sells Unlimited Essential (1GB a day, then 1.25 Mbps) and Unlimited Plus (2GB a day, then 2 Mbps). Seven days costs $22 on Essential and $25 on Plus.

Cosmote vs Vodafone vs Nova: the network question

Greece has three networks: Cosmote (now being rebranded as Telekom), Vodafone Greece and Nova. In Athens, Thessaloniki, Heraklion and the big island towns you won't tell them apart. All three run 5G in the cities and 4G along the coast.

The gap opens up where Greece gets interesting:

  • Smaller islands: Opensignal's March 2026 report put Cosmote first for coverage experience, Vodafone second and Nova third. Travelers who test the three on Cycladic islands report the same order: Cosmote reaches the quiet beaches and hill villages, Vodafone covers most of them, Nova thins out fastest.
  • Ferries: Every network drops a few kilometres out of port. Cosmote tends to hold the signal longest and pick it up first as the boat nears the next island. Between islands, assume you're offline.
  • Mountains and the mainland interior: Meteora, Zagori and the Mani are well covered on the roads and in the villages. On hiking trails and in gorges (Samaria on Crete, Vikos in Zagori) expect gaps on any network.
  • Ferry Wi-Fi: Blue Star, Hellenic Seaways and Superfast give free Wi-Fi only on short Saronic routes. On Cyclades, Dodecanese and Crete crossings you pay for a package, from about €5 for basic browsing on one device.

Wayfarro's Greece eSIM connects to Cosmote and Vodafone Greece, the two strongest networks for islands. Nomad and Airalo both lead with Nova. If your trip is Athens plus Santorini and Mykonos, any of them is fine. If it includes Folegandros, Amorgos, Ikaria or a week of sailing, buy on Cosmote.

What "unlimited" means on a Greece eSIM

Every unlimited travel eSIM has a daily fair-use limit. After the day's high-speed allowance you're slowed until the next day. Wayfarro publishes its limits on the plan page: 1GB a day on Lite and Essential, 2GB a day on Plus, then 512 kbps, 1.25 Mbps or 2 Mbps for the rest of the day. Nomad's and Airalo's Greece pages don't state a daily limit, so ask before you rely on one.

In practice:

  • 512 kbps still runs Google Maps, Ferryhopper and WhatsApp. It won't stream the evening's football in HD.
  • If you'll tether a laptop from a taverna every day, Unlimited Plus (2GB a day, then 2 Mbps) behaves most like a normal connection.
  • Greece is cheap on fixed data. If you know your total (10GB over two weeks, say), a fixed plan costs less and never throttles.

Which Greece eSIM should you buy?

Pick by trip shape, not by brand:

  • City break in Athens or Thessaloniki (3–5 days): The 3GB plan at $5.50 covers maps, museum tickets and messages, and it's a third of Nomad's price for the same size. For a heavy-use long weekend, the 3-day unlimited plan is $11.
  • One week, phone out all day: The 7-day unlimited plan at $21 is the cheapest in this comparison and runs on Cosmote.
  • Two-week island hop: The 10GB plan at $12 is the sweet spot. Nomad charges $18 for the same. Top up if you run low; the plan stays installed.
  • A month on Crete or sailing the Ionian: The 30-day unlimited plan is $45, well under Airalo's $69. If you'd rather avoid daily caps, 50GB for 30 days is $31, level with Nomad.
  • Travelers with an EU SIM: Check your Roam Like at Home allowance first. If it's generous, you may not need an eSIM at all.

How to set up an eSIM for Greece

Install at home, switch it on when you land. It takes about two minutes:

  1. Check your phone is unlocked and supports eSIM. iPhone XS and later, Google Pixel 3 and later, and most recent Samsung Galaxy phones do.
  2. Install over Wi-Fi before you fly. Scan the QR code or use the one-tap install. Step-by-step install guide.
  3. Label it "Greece" so it's easy to find in settings.
  4. When you land, set the Greece eSIM as your mobile-data line and turn on Data Roaming for it. Travel eSIMs connect as roaming lines, so data won't flow without that switch.
  5. Keep your home SIM on for calls and texts with its own data roaming off, so bank codes and booking confirmations still arrive.

With Wayfarro, your plan's validity starts when the eSIM first connects in Greece, not when you install it. Athens airport has free Wi-Fi in two-hour sessions if you want to sort anything out before you leave the terminal.

Greece-specific tips

Ferry apps need data at the dock. Ferryhopper tickets, Blue Star e-tickets and the live departure boards all live on your phone, and ports like Piraeus and Rafina are big enough that you'll be checking which gate your boat leaves from. Have the eSIM on before you reach the port.

Island roads are navigation by app. Rental cars and ATVs on Naxos, Paros, Milos and Crete mean Google Maps all day. Download offline maps for the islands you're visiting as a backup for the stretches between villages.

Tap to pay is everywhere, cash is still useful. Greece has pushed card payments hard since 2024, and most tavernas, kiosks and ferries take contactless. Smaller beach bars and island bakeries still prefer cash, so keep some euros.

Summer crowds load the towers. In Oia at sunset or Mykonos town at midnight, the cell is shared with thousands of other phones. Speeds dip on every network. Send your photos in the morning.

Bottom line

Wayfarro is the cheapest in this comparison on almost every Greece plan and runs on Cosmote, the network that works best on the islands and ferries. Nomad is level on 1GB and 50GB and a fair alternative at 3 days of unlimited. Airalo costs more at every unlimited length. Whichever you choose, install it at home and turn on data roaming when you land. See Wayfarro's Greece eSIM plans. FAQ

Which network is best for an eSIM in Greece?

Cosmote, which is being rebranded as Telekom in Greece. It's the largest operator and came first for coverage experience in Opensignal's March 2026 Greece report, ahead of Vodafone and Nova. That lead matters most on the smaller islands, on ferry crossings and in the mountains. Wayfarro's Greece eSIM uses Cosmote and Vodafone Greece.

Does a Greece eSIM work on the islands and on ferries?

Yes on the islands: Santorini, Mykonos, Crete, Rhodes, Corfu, Naxos and Paros all have solid 4G in the towns and beaches, and 5G in the bigger ones. On ferries, signal fades a few kilometres out of port on every network and comes back as you approach the next island. Cosmote tends to hold on longest and reconnect first. Ferry companies sell on-board Wi-Fi packages on Cyclades, Dodecanese and Crete routes; it's only free on the short Saronic crossings.

I have an EU SIM. Do I need a Greece eSIM at all?

Probably not for a short trip. Greece is in the EU, so a SIM from another EU country roams at home prices under Roam Like at Home, subject to your plan's fair-use data cap. A travel eSIM makes sense if you're from outside the EU, if your home plan's roaming allowance is small, or if you'd rather not touch your home plan's data at all.

How much data do I need for a week in Greece?

Around 1GB a day covers maps, ferry apps, messaging and photos, so 5–7GB for a week. Wayfarro's 10GB plan at $12 gives headroom for a two-week island hop. If you'll stream or video-call every evening, the 7-day unlimited plan at $21 is the simpler buy.

Can I use a Greece eSIM in Italy, Turkey or Albania on the same trip?

A Greece eSIM only works in Greece. For a trip that continues to Italy by ferry or across the Balkans, a Europe regional eSIM covers Greece and its neighbours on one plan, or you can pair single-country plans in the Trip Builder. Turkey needs its own plan or a regional plan that lists it.

When does my Greece eSIM start counting down?

With Wayfarro, validity starts when the eSIM first connects to a Greek network, not when you install it. Install it at home on Wi-Fi and switch it on when you land in Athens, Thessaloniki or Heraklion.
