Best eSIM for Puerto Rico (2026): Prices, Networks and Whether You Even Need One
Updated · Wayfarro team

The best eSIM for Puerto Rico is a tie between Wayfarro and Nomad on fixed data, and Wayfarro if you want unlimited. Both charge the same at 1GB, 3GB, 5GB, 10GB and 20GB (5GB for 30 days is $15 at Wayfarro and $15 at Nomad). Nomad is cheaper at 50GB, at $49. Nomad sells no unlimited plans for Puerto Rico, so a week of unlimited at $19 is a Wayfarro-only option. Wayfarro's prices come straight from its store; Nomad's were checked in October 2026. Airalo didn't list a Puerto Rico plan when we checked, so it isn't in the table.
One thing before the prices. Puerto Rico is a US territory, and its phone system is integrated with the mainland's. If you're flying in from the mainland on a US plan, check whether your plan already covers Puerto Rico as domestic, because many do. If it does, you don't need an eSIM at all. The rest of this guide is for everyone else: visitors from Canada, Europe, Latin America and Asia, and US travelers whose plan charges roaming on the island.

How to read this table: Wayfarro and Nomad are level at every fixed size from 1GB to 20GB. Nomad is cheaper at 50GB. Wayfarro is the only one of the two with unlimited plans, with a 1-day plan, and with 2GB and 100GB plans. Nomad names Liberty Puerto Rico as its network; Wayfarro doesn't name its partner on the plan page. A dash means the provider doesn't sell that exact plan, or we couldn't confirm its US-dollar price.
Wayfarro's unlimited rows are its Unlimited Lite plans: 1GB a day at full speed, then 512 kbps until the next day. It also sells Unlimited Essential (1GB a day, then 1.25 Mbps) and Unlimited Plus (2GB a day, then 2 Mbps). Seven days costs $23 on Essential and $46 on Plus. Nomad says its eSIMs support hotspot.
Which is the best eSIM for Puerto Rico for your trip?
Pick by how long you're staying and how far from San Juan you're going:
- Long weekend in San Juan (3 days): 1GB at $4.50, the same price as Nomad, covers walking directions around Old San Juan, ride-hailing to Condado and a few photos. For a weekend of posting from the beach, the 3-day unlimited at $9 is the Wayfarro-only option.
- One week, San Juan plus El Yunque and a day on the east coast: 5GB at $15, level with Nomad. For video every day, the 7-day unlimited at $19.
- Ten days to two weeks, island loop (Ponce, Rincón, Vieques or Culebra): 10GB at $25, level with Nomad, or the 15-day unlimited at $40. A rental-car loop uses maps all day, so the unlimited plan is the one to pick if you'll also stream music on the drive.
- A month, or working remotely from Rincón or Isla Verde: 20GB at $35 is level with Nomad, and at 50GB Nomad's $49 beats Wayfarro's $68. If you'll hotspot a laptop every day, the 30-day Plus plan at $191 gives 2GB a day before the slowdown.
- A cruise call or a single connecting day: The 1-day unlimited at $5.
Networks and coverage in Puerto Rico
Puerto Rico's mobile operators are Liberty, T-Mobile and Claro. Liberty is the newest name on the list but not a new network: Liberty Latin America bought AT&T's wireless business in Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands for $1.95 billion, completing the deal in October 2020, and phones switched from showing AT&T to showing Liberty before the AT&T brand was retired there in September 2021. Nomad runs its Puerto Rico eSIM on Liberty. Wayfarro's plan page doesn't name its partner network.
Hurricane Maria destroyed much of the island's internet infrastructure in September 2017, and in 2019 the FCC approved $950 million to rebuild and strengthen it in Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands. The networks you'll use today are the rebuilt ones.
What to expect on the ground:
- San Juan, Carolina, Isla Verde, Condado: The capital region is the core of every network. Fine on any plan.
- The autopistas: The main highways between San Juan, Ponce and the west coast are where you'll spend the driving hours, and they're the backbone of the island's coverage.
- El Yunque: The only tropical rainforest in the US National Forest System, and the most visited natural attraction on the island. Treat the trails as offline: download the map and your reservation before you turn off the highway.
- Vieques and Culebra: The towns have service. The far beaches and the night-time bio bay tour are for photos you'll upload later.
- The central mountains (Ruta Panorámica, Jayuya, Adjuntas): Towns are covered; the switchbacks between them are where to expect gaps.
How to set up an eSIM for Puerto Rico
Install at home, turn it on when you land. It takes about two minutes:
- Check your phone isn't carrier-locked and supports eSIM. iPhone XS and later, Google Pixel 3 and later, and most recent Samsung Galaxy phones do.
- Install over Wi-Fi before you fly. Scan the QR code or use the one-tap install link. Step-by-step install guide.
- Label it "Puerto Rico" so it's easy to pick in settings.
- When you land, set the Puerto Rico eSIM as your mobile-data line and turn on Data Roaming for it. Travel eSIMs technically roam, so data won't connect without this setting.
- Keep your home SIM on for calls and texts (turn its data roaming off to avoid charges) so you still get bank verification codes.
With Wayfarro, your plan's validity starts when the eSIM first connects in Puerto Rico, not when you install it. Buying a week before you fly costs you nothing.
Landing at SJU: the busiest airport in the Caribbean
Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU) handled about 13.6 million passengers in 2025, more than any other airport in the insular Caribbean. It sits in Carolina, in the beachfront Isla Verde district, a short ride from Condado and Old San Juan. Nonstop flights run year-round from Atlanta, Chicago, Miami, New York and Orlando, plus Bogotá, Madrid, Toronto and Panama City, and San Juan is the connecting hub for the Lesser Antilles and the Virgin Islands. US citizens don't need a passport to enter, because Puerto Rico is a US territory.
For an eSIM traveler this is an easy arrival. Your plan connects as the doors open, you order a ride from the terminal, and you're in Old San Juan in half an hour. If you're connecting onward to St. Thomas, St. Maarten or Punta Cana, your Puerto Rico plan stops at the island; each of those needs its own plan, or a combination built in the Trip Builder.
Old San Juan, El Yunque and the islands
Puerto Rico packs a lot into a small island, and most of it is reachable by rental car in a day. Old San Juan's fortresses, part of the San Juan National Historic Site, are the walk everyone does first; a data connection there is for directions through the blue-cobbled streets and a ride back. El Yunque is an hour east. Ponce, the second city, has the Museo de Arte de Ponce and its own Creole architecture; Rincón on the west coast is the surf town. Vieques has its own small airport, and Culebra's Flamenco Beach is reached by ferry or a short hop from the mainland.
If Puerto Rico is one stop on a wider Caribbean trip, the Caribbean eSIM covers 29 countries and territories on one eSIM, from the Dominican Republic and Jamaica to Aruba and Curaçao, but not Puerto Rico itself, so you'd pair it with a Puerto Rico plan. Punta Cana is the most common next stop, and it needs its own Dominican Republic plan.
Bottom line
On fixed data, Wayfarro and Nomad are level, so the best eSIM for Puerto Rico comes down to what else you need: Nomad if you want 50GB or a plan that names Liberty, Wayfarro if you want unlimited data, a 1-day plan or hotspot-heavy use on the Plus tier. If you're coming from the US mainland, check your own plan before buying either. See Wayfarro's Puerto Rico eSIM plans, read the best eSIM for the Caribbean guide if you're island-hopping, or combine islands in the Trip Builder.
FAQ
Do I need an eSIM for Puerto Rico if I'm coming from the US mainland?
Maybe not. Puerto Rico is a US territory with a phone system integrated with the mainland's, under the +1 country code with the 787 and 939 area codes, and regulated by the FCC. Many mainland plans treat it as domestic. Check your own plan's terms before you buy anything: if Puerto Rico is included, you don't need an eSIM at all. An eSIM is for visitors from everywhere else, and for US travelers whose plan charges roaming there.
Which network is best for an eSIM in Puerto Rico?
Puerto Rico's mobile operators are Liberty, T-Mobile and Claro. Liberty took over AT&T's wireless business in Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands in October 2020 and retired the AT&T brand there in September 2021. Nomad's Puerto Rico eSIM runs on Liberty, and Wayfarro's plan page doesn't name its partner network. All of them cover San Juan, the resort beaches and the main highways.
How much data do I need for a week in Puerto Rico?
Maps on the drive to El Yunque, ride-hailing in San Juan, WhatsApp and photos use about 0.5–1GB a day, so 5GB at $15 covers a normal week with hotel Wi-Fi in the evenings. If you'll post video every day or hotspot a laptop, the 7-day unlimited at $19 removes the counting.
Will I have signal on Vieques and Culebra?
The islands have towns, ferries and small airports, so expect a working connection around Esperanza, Isabel Segunda and Dewey. The beaches at the far end of Culebra, Flamenco included, and the bioluminescent bay tour at night are where to download directions and tickets first rather than count on it.
Does a Puerto Rico eSIM work in the Dominican Republic or the US Virgin Islands?
No, a Wayfarro Puerto Rico plan covers Puerto Rico only. San Juan is a hub for the Lesser Antilles and the Virgin Islands, with short flights to St. Thomas, St. Maarten and Punta Cana. For those, buy a plan for each island or combine them in the Trip Builder. Wayfarro's Caribbean regional plan covers 29 countries and territories but not Puerto Rico itself.
