Best eSIM for Malta (2026): Prices, Networks and Which Plan to Buy for Valletta, Gozo and Comino

Updated · Wayfarro team

best esim for malta

The best eSIM for Malta on price is Wayfarro, which is cheaper than or level with Nomad and Airalo on every plan we compared. 3GB for 30 days costs $5.50 against $9 at Nomad, and a week of unlimited data costs $21 against $25 at Nomad and $27 at Airalo. For a short trip, Wayfarro's 1GB plan is $4 against $4.50 at Nomad. Wayfarro's prices come straight from its store; Nomad's and Airalo's were checked on their own sites in October 2026.

Malta is tiny: three inhabited islands, one airport and three mobile networks. Most visitors stay a week or less, so the real question is how much you'll film the blue water, and whether Sicily or another country is part of the same trip.

How to read this table: Wayfarro is under Nomad on every fixed-data size from 1GB to 20GB and level at 50GB. On unlimited it's level with Nomad at 3 days and the cheapest of the three from 5 days to 30. Airalo's Malta page listed unlimited plans only, and Nomad's unlimited stops at 10 days. Wayfarro is the only one here with a 1-day unlimited plan, a 2GB plan and a 100GB plan ($78). A dash means the provider doesn't sell that exact plan, or we couldn't confirm its US-dollar price.

Wayfarro's unlimited rows are Unlimited Lite: 1GB a day at full speed, then 512 kbps until the next day. For faster speeds after that, Unlimited Essential (then 1.25 Mbps) is $22 for a week and Unlimited Plus (2GB a day, then 2 Mbps) is $25. Nomad and Airalo don't state a daily high-speed allowance on their Malta pages.

Which is the best eSIM for Malta for your trip?

On an island this size, trip length and video are what decide it:

  • Valletta long weekend: 1GB at $4 or 2GB at $5 covers maps, bus times and messaging. For a weekend of reels, the 3-day unlimited at $11 is level with Nomad.
  • A week across Malta and Gozo: 3GB at $5.50 or 5GB at $7.50, both well under Nomad. Heavy video users should take the 7-day unlimited at $21.
  • A language course or a month's stay: 20GB at $19, or 30 days unlimited at $45 against $69 at Airalo.
  • A day on a cruise stop: The 1-day unlimited at $4 covers a day in Valletta; nobody else here sells one.
  • Malta plus Sicily or mainland Europe: Buy Wayfarro's Europe regional plan, which covers Malta and Italy with more than 30 other countries, from $9 for 5GB.

Networks in Malta

Malta has three mobile networks: Epic, GO and Melita, and all three run 4G and 5G. Epic (owned by Monaco Telecom) is the largest, with about 341,000 subscribers in mid-2025. GO (formerly Maltacom), now majority-owned by Tunisie Telecom, has about 279,000, and Melita about 173,000. GO also owns most of Cablenet, one of the networks in Cyprus.

Nomad's eSIM uses GO and Epic, Airalo's uses Epic, and Wayfarro's plan page doesn't name its partner network. In a country this small, network choice matters less than price. The one habit worth keeping is to download maps before a boat trip to Comino's Blue Lagoon or the sea caves, in case the signal drops out on the water.

How to set up an eSIM for Malta

Install it before you go:

  1. Check your phone is unlocked and eSIM-ready. iPhone XS and later, Pixel 3 and later, and most recent Samsung Galaxy phones are.
  2. Install over Wi-Fi at home with the QR code or the one-tap link. Step-by-step install guide.
  3. Name it "Malta" in settings.
  4. When you land in Luqa, make the Malta eSIM your mobile-data line and turn on Data Roaming for it. Travel eSIMs connect by roaming.
  5. Keep your home SIM on for calls and verification texts, with its data roaming off.

Wayfarro's validity starts with the first connection in Malta, so installing early costs nothing. You can top up the same eSIM in the app, and hotspot is allowed.

The airport, the buses and the Gozo ferry

Malta International Airport, in Luqa, is 5 km southwest of Valletta and the only international airport for all the Maltese islands. It has been the hub of KM Malta Airlines since March 2024, when it replaced Air Malta. From the arrivals hall, data gets you a bus route or a ride-hailing car into Valletta, Sliema or St Julian's without hunting for Wi-Fi.

Gozo is the trip almost everyone adds. Gozo Channel's ferries cross between Ċirkewwa, at the northern tip of Malta, and Mġarr on Gozo all year round, including night sailings, using three identical roll-on roll-off ships. Your Malta eSIM works on Gozo and Comino too, so you can check the next crossing and the bus connection on the other side while you're still on the road to the terminal.

Bottom line

Wayfarro is the best eSIM for Malta on price for every plan we compared: under Nomad on fixed data up to 20GB, level at 50GB, and the cheapest unlimited at every length from 5 to 30 days. One Malta plan covers Gozo and Comino too. If the trip continues to Sicily or elsewhere in Europe, buy the Europe plan instead. See Wayfarro's Malta eSIM plans, read the Italy eSIM guide for the next stop, or map the route in the Trip Builder.

FAQ

Which network is best for an eSIM in Malta?

Malta has three mobile networks, all with 4G and 5G: Epic is the largest with about 341,000 subscribers, then GO with about 279,000 and Melita with about 173,000. Nomad's Malta eSIM uses GO and Epic, Airalo's uses Epic, and Wayfarro's plan page doesn't name its partner network.

Does a Malta eSIM work on Gozo?

Yes. Gozo and Comino are part of Malta, so a Malta plan covers them on the same networks as the main island. The Gozo Channel ferry from Ċirkewwa to Mġarr runs all year, including at night, so you can check the next sailing on your phone before you drive to the terminal.

How much data do I need for a week in Malta?

Maps, bus and ferry times, messaging and photos use about 0.5–1GB a day, so 5GB at $7.50 covers a week. If you'll stream or post video from every cove, the 7-day unlimited at $21 is under Nomad's $25 and Airalo's $27.

Can I use one eSIM for Malta and Sicily?

Not with a Malta plan, which covers Malta only. Wayfarro's Europe regional plan covers Malta and Italy together with more than 30 other countries, from $9 for 5GB, so buy that if Sicily or anywhere else in Europe is part of the trip.
